How Treatment Decisions Are Made

Each week, our specialists review patient findings together and agree on the most appropriate care plan.

1

Gather Clinical Findings

The team brings together each patient’s history, examination findings and biochemical results.

2

Review Imaging Together

Radiologists interpret scans with surgeons and other specialists to clarify the diagnosis and assess treatment options.

3

Agree on Next Steps

The team recommends a treatment plan and coordinates care with the appropriate specialist.

The People Behind Coordinated HPB Care

Surgeons and Clinical Trainees

HPB surgeons work alongside residents and medical officers to assess patients, plan procedures and support care throughout treatment.

Dedicated Peri-Operative Nurses

Specialist nurses prepare and care for patients in the operating theatre, working closely with the surgical team.

Multidisciplinary Specialists

Oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, interventional radiologists, anesthetists and physician specialists contribute their expertise to treatment decisions.

Step 1

Initial Assessment

Clinicians review symptoms, medical history and available test results to identify the patient’s care needs.

Step 2

Weekly Team Discussion

The multidisciplinary team examines clinical findings, biochemical results and imaging to understand the condition.

Step 3

Treatment Recommendation

Specialists discuss the available options and agree on a plan suited to the patient’s findings.

Step 4

Specialist Referral

The patient is directed to the appropriate specialist so the recommended care can proceed.

Specialist HPB Care Beyond Korle-Bu

The HPB team supports hospitals across Ghana by extending specialist surgical expertise to patients who may face long or difficult journeys to Accra. We work with referring clinicians to review cases involving the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and duodenum and identify practical next steps for care.

Surgical Assistance Where Patients Need It

When transferring a patient to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital is logistically challenging, our team can travel to another hospital to assist with a surgical procedure. This outreach approach helps local clinical teams access specialist support while allowing patients to receive care closer to home when appropriate.

Let’s Plan the Next Step in Care

Whether you need guidance about a possible HPB condition, wish to refer a patient or require surgical outreach support at your hospital, connect with the HPB team to discuss the case and available options.
