About HPB Surgery at Korle Bu
Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery treats conditions of the liver, pancreas, duodenum, gallbladder and biliary system that require surgical care. Formal hepatobiliary surgical practice was established at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in 2017, creating an organized approach to managing these complex conditions.
Today, the unit brings specialists together to provide continuous, compassionate care, with inpatients admitted to the third-floor ward of the surgical block. Its mission is to improve outcomes and quality of life through multidisciplinary collaboration, research and the training of future surgeons. Nurses and doctors also dedicate time beyond their regular shifts to caring for patients.
Coordinated Care at Every Step
Surgeons, gastroenterologists, radiologists, interventional radiologists and anaesthetists meet every Monday afternoon to review patients and recommend suitable treatment options.
Surgical Assessment
HPB surgeons evaluate conditions affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary system and help guide decisions about surgical treatment.
Gastroenterology Input
Gastroenterologists contribute their expertise in digestive disease to the team’s assessment and care planning.
Imaging and Intervention
Radiologists and interventional radiologists help interpret imaging and assess when image-guided procedures may be appropriate.
Anaesthesia and Inpatient Support
Anaesthetists contribute to treatment planning, while the ward’s nurses and doctors provide ongoing care during admission.
