What we do
HPB Surgical Service
We primarily deal with surgical diseases of the liver, the gallbladder, the pancreas and the duodenum. We also handle surgeries of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as the stomach, spleen, and the abdominal esophagus.
Since 2017, we have routinely conducted surgeries for the liver, the pancreas, the gallbladder, and duodenum. We have also undertaken some training activities for our nurses and our doctors. Currently there are two surgeons running the units together with our residents and our medical officers. We have a dedicated team of peri-operative nurses who manage our patients in the operating theatre. We manage patients across Ghana and the West African sub region.
Because most of our patients also come from the northern part of Ghana. We have doctors who refer to patients. There is a system in place designed to help us reach out to these patients without them travelling to Accra.
Our Treatment method
We have a team of specialists who meet on a weekly basis to discuss all the patients we have seen to recommend the best treatments for them. This team comprises of surgeons, oncologists, gastroenterologist, radiologists, interventional radiologists, anesthetists and physician specialists. Our process involves evaluating the patients’ clinical information, biochemical analysis together with imaging in a meeting. The radiologists will look at the images and give some details that helps to plan our treatment options. We then share our ideas and conclude upon what the problems are and then we can recommend treatments for them. So, after recommending treatment, the patients are referred to the appropriate specialist for the care to continue. This process has given us opportunity of improving care for patients when they visit our the Korle-Bu teaching hospital.
The HPB team also offer outreach services to other hospitals across Ghana. We send a team to assist surgical procedures in situations where patient transfer to Korle-Bu is logistically challenging.
